Phonics Projects

When I begin guided reading/phonics small groups in January, I use these activities to give my students a fun way to review skills independently while I work with groups. These projects tend to keep students engaged longer than traditional worksheets.

January

*Snowman Short Vowel Sort: Children cut out the pieces and assemble the snowman. They then cut out the pictures and glue on the correct part of the snowman based on the short vowel sound.

*Color Word Mittens: Children read the color words on each mitten and color the mittens accordingly. They then cut out the mittens and hang the pairs on the clothesline.

*Mitten Puzzle: Children cut out the puzzle pieces and read the words on the pieces. They then match the words to the pictures to assemble the puzzle. I've also create a beginning sounds version.

*Snowman CVC puzzle: Children cut out the puzzle pieces and read the CVC words on the pieces. They then match the words to the pictures to assemble the puzzle.

*Snowmen: Children match short e words and pictures in order to build snowmen. Children cut out matching words and pictures. They glue the larger ball (word) on the bottom and the smaller ball (picture) on top. They then add a snowman head to complete the snowman. We glue these to blue paper and add cotton snow at the bottom and snowflake confetti around our snowmen.

*Mittens: This is an /at/ family word/picture match (easily changed for other skills). Children cut out the mittens and glue the matching ones together on a sheet of paper. They use a short piece of string to connect the matching mittens.

February

*Valentine Mobile: Provide each student with a heart cutout with a string attached at the bottom. Students cut out the word/picture hearts and glue them back to back along the string.

*Valentine Bears: Students cut out the hearts with the letters and either 1) match to the picture with the beginning sound or 2) use the letters to spell the CVC words.

*Valentine Puzzle: Children cut out the puzzle pieces and read the CVC words on the pieces. They then match the words to the pictures to assemble the puzzle. I've also created a beginning sounds version.

March

*Rockets: We created these rockets during our space unit. Children match onset and rime to create CVC words to match the pictures. They glue their completed rockets to a sheet of black construction paper and add glitter stars.

*Keys: When we study transportation, I use this project to review the /er/ sound. Children cut out the pictures (/er/ pictures) and glue them to the round part of the key. They then cut out the keys and use a hole puncher to put a single hole in each key. After I checked their work, they put string through the holes to make a key ring to tie on their belt loop. Here are a few other versions of the same project (different skills):

Beginning Sounds/Beginning sound pictures

Short u/Short u pictures

/sh/ and /th///sh/ and /th/ pictures

*Sailboats: This is a word/picture match that reviews the sound of /er/. I used the same project but changed the words/pictures to review CVC words. I provided the children with a long sheet of blue paper that was cut into waves at the top. Children match words/pictures and glue them to the paper to make sailboats. They colored the boats and added details such as cotton clouds and sticker fish.

*Pots of Gold: I use this word/picture match (review of /ar/ and /oo/) for St. Patrick’s Day. Children match the words and pictures and then color all the coins gold (yellow). They then cut out a pot using a stencil and glue their gold coins to the pot. If they have extra time, I allow them to color and cut out a leprechaun to go with the pot.

April

*Flowers: Students cut out stems and "middles" of flowers. They match the pictures on the middles to the words/letters on the stems. They then rip pieces of tissue paper to add petals to the flowers.

Beginning sounds version, CVC version, sh/th version, "special sounds" version

*Eggs: Provide each child with a basket cut out (fold a sheet of construction paper in half lengthwise and cut out the opening part). Students match the pictures to the CVC words on the eggs. They then cut out the eggs and glue them on the basket.

May/June

*Zoo Puzzle: Children cut out the puzzle pieces and read the CVC words on the pieces. They then match the words to the pictures to assemble the puzzle.

Anytime

*Balloons: This is a beginning sound sheet although I have also used it to practice phonetic spelling and CVC word/picture match. Children write the beginning sounds (or words) then color/cut the balloons. I provide a large sheet of blue paper, short pieces of string, and cotton. Children glue completed balloons to the paper and add strings. They can use cotton to create clouds.

*Apple Basket: This is a short o word/picture match. Children cut and glue to match words to pictures. They can then color the apples and cut them out. I provided brown paper and a basket stencil for tracing so children could create an apple basket. Simply change the words/pictures to focus on other skills.
